FEAR – Revisited!

Perhaps you have heard the idea that in the simplest scenario, there are only two emotions: love and fear. If you aren't coming from a place of love, it must be fear in the driver's seat. There is a song by Shawn Gallaway, I Choose Love, that I find very empowering as he repeats over and over again: Love or Fear: What do you choose?

These past two weeks have found me regularly acknowledging the presence of fear and choosing to move through it. Sometimes that choice is easier than others! One thing I know about fear is this: when I allow it to control my actions, I crawl in a hole, do less and less, stop reaching out. I shrivel up! And the only direction that this takes me is toward depression. That's not a place I want to live!

Recently I included this unoriginal acronym in a post:

FEAR – (F)alse (E)vidence (A)ppearing (R)eal

Humility … new style!

And a mid-August hello to you!

It is Monday evening and I’ve spent some time today thinking about this coming Sunday when I’ll be privileged to share music at Harmony Café again. Only the second time, this still feels rather new and scary to me. And as I write that, I need to ask myself why? Why do I have any reservations? Writing songs and singing is what I do! In the same way, you may “do” cooking or perhaps you “do” painting. Maybe you “do” helping people by giving of your time.

Several years ago I heard a definition of humility that really supports how I want to show up in the world. Believing in humility “new style” is what gave me the courage to say “yes” to singing at Harmony Café. I’d like to share it with you as a reminder for me.

But before I share it, here is humility as I remember learning it early on:

A bit more play

Good Morning to you!

I found myself in a very “busy” mental state this morning as I sat to journal, do my “morning pages” as Julia Cameron calls them. My natural and initial response was to try to “figure out what was wrong” and “fix it”. I am grateful that it occurred to me that another choice was just to notice it, be with it, and not necessarily fix it!

Following that awareness, I fell into a creative place…

Playing with words

Do you like to play with words? As a writer, I do, and I play with them in prose, poetry, and lyric. But as a computer programmer, I have been around words as acronyms for a very long time. Finding just the right words to go with each letter of the acronym in a way that defines it is both fun and challenging. Two of my long time favorites that I originally heard at Unity, are:

FEAR – (F)alse (E)vidence (A)ppearing (R)eal

TRUST – (T)aking (R)isks (U)nder (S)tressful (T)imes

What do you do with the freedom that you have?

Happy Independence Day!

Here in northeast Wisconsin, we are experiencing the most amazing and glorious holiday weekend. In my personal definition, it is perfection! And on top of that, it is the weekend of celebrating freedom, independence, that sacred gift that we in America experience in a way that many in this world cannot.

Beyond the external freedoms, how does your spirit experience freedom? Are you truly free in the choices you make each day about what you will do, how you spend your time, what you believe, how you show up in the world? Do you take seriously each “minor” decision along life's way, knowing that it is the very essence of your life, the impact that you are privileged to have in this lifetime?

This month, consider a new way of looking at the phrase “How important is it, really?”

How Important It Is … Really!

May you cherish each and every freedom that is available to you this day!
